Final College Essay

In the space provided, please write a concise narrative in which you describe a meaningful event, experience or accomplishment in your life and how it will affect your college experience or your contribution to the UF campus community. You may want to reflect on your ideas about student responsibility, academic integrity, campus citizenship or a call to service.

I have spent my whole life trying to climb trees. Each challenge I faced was a new tree that brought stronger feelings of frustration.  Albert Einstein suggested looking at life from a new angle. He said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Everyone is a genius in his or her own way…even me.

Growing up with learning disabilities was never ideal. There were a lot of times when I felt discouraged, frustrated, and just wanted to be “normal.” My four older sisters excelled very easily in high school. They made me want to achieve higher and do better. My brain could never think as fast or as sharply as theirs could. I found myself jealous of the students in class during test reviews set up like a Jeopardy game. By the time they pushed their button and answered the question, my brain had just finished processing what the question was asking me. I could answer the question; it just took me a little longer to come up with the answer.

My parents were a great support system when it came to my learning disability. They spent countless hours helping me and comforting me when I was frustrated from feeling like everyone was smarter than I was. They always told me that I was smart. I was smart in my own way. I would nod in agreement, despite the fact that I felt that anything less than an A on my spelling test would mean that I would go nowhere in life. Now, as I look back at the people I was once so jealous of, I laugh at my way of thinking. Those kids who got A’s on every spelling test and pressed their button first in Jeopardy, and those kids who had it so easy in school, are not necessarily the ones who are heading towards success. It is often times the kids that had to work towards finding their own strengths that are pursuing a bright future—kids like me. I had to work harder at what came easy to others but this acceptance of myself, my strengths, and my weaknesses is what I consider to be my greatest accomplishment. As a UF student, I will work hard and persevere. The journey will be even more appreciated because of the extra time and effort I put into everything. I am prepared for challenges, but I am also prepared to overcome them. I am devoted. I am passionate. I know my weaknesses, but I also know my strengths.

If not being a good jeopardy partner or never making that A on my spelling test (even though I studied all night for it) makes me a better student, I’m okay with that. I’ve realized that as a fish, I might not be able to climb that tree, but I’m pretty good at swimming through rough waters.

*(the story is being told by some uneducated bum on the street)
Yo hear me out dawg. I have got to tell you a story about this police officer who caught Grendel. You know Grendel? People called him Big Del. Yeah boyyyyy, he was one hell of a gang banger (someone who participates in a gang). Well the city protector (police officer), his name was officer Beowulf. You know officer Beowulf,  He’s the one all the girls loved, apparently saved a kitten from a tree last week. Blah blah blah well dawg I’m tellin you, he murdered Big Del bro. but heres the story; well big del had been murdering a bunch of people, hes alittle crazy since he had started up on that white power(drugs)ya know what I mean boyyy ha ha. Well the head of safety patrol( police department) officer Hrothgar and his gun helpers(other officers) couldn’t stop him. Now officer Beowulf use to help fight crime in another city but when he found out about Big Del, well he traveled from his home town Geatland, over here to Heorot to get big Dels, muscular, shagaty, tattooed head to toe ghetto ass in jail. So he came over here with some other crime fighters (officers) to help stop Big Del. They came prepared too, let me tell youuu ha ha. You could shoot him with an AK and I don’t think he could they could die bro. he had some bomb, gun, knife/ anything dangerous repellent suit on. Guns clipped all around his hip and a nice snap back hat that said City Saver. He looked like a boss bro. anyways, As he was walking through the city patrol station (police department) people kept stopping him asking why he was there and how he could be so brave and officer Beowulf

just said it was his duty to save all people he could. He went up to officer Hrothgar and said I would like to catch this ratchet killer. He even said he would do it without is life proof suit and guns. Hrothgar thought about it for a second and said that he could help. He had dinner with the department that night. Some of the officers were apparently taunting officer Beowulf on how he apparently lost in a swimming match. Officer Beowulf went on to tell his story. He flashes back in the moment to what he thought happened during that time, which is how he won. Well all the officer were plaster brooo so they all believed him and were all cheerin for him. So after that, all the officers of Heorot leave Officer Beowulf and his men in this room next to the crime fighters office to see if they can catch Big Del. They all pretend to be asleep and take off all there suits and guns. The other officers were certain that they were going to die that night. No armor meant dead, ya know boy? Dats just crazy. I personally think that Beowulf was on that white powder too cause that’s just crazy bro. He be lookin to get killed.  But anyways, in the middle of the night, Grendel was outside of the room where the officers were, slowly creeping towards the city protectors.  So bro check this out, then fat Big Del brakes down the door, and stabs one of Beowulf’s officers. Now officer Beowulf was watching him boy ha ha . He wasn’t shocked by how Big Del was acting, but then when Big Del went up to kill Beowulf, Beowulf grabed his knife out of his hands. Big Del was amazing by Beowulf’s strength since he was a lot smaller than he was. So Big Del ran, boyyy he ran so fast. At least that was what I was told. I heard he was fast too. He won the 400 in states back when he did track, before he started hitting up those drugs though man. Any ways Big Del ran. Someone told me where I don’t remember where though, but Beowulf followed behind him and caught him! He jumped on his back and wrestled him down until he was able to put hand cuffs on him. Im telling you bro he is so strong but I also

heard that he had a taser on him which helped him take him down but I don’t think that’s true cause how could he remember to grab a taser in the heat of the moment but I don’t know. All I know is that Big Del got himself in the slammer and he is never getting out of that place of shame.  Im tellin ya, never get on drugs. Those things mess you up. But since then officer Beowulf has been the city hero. All the girls love him and all the guys want to be him. So now I don’t have to worry about anybody killin me on the streets. Because of officer Beowulf I finally feel safe in Heorot.
